What causes skin pigmentation?

Pigmentation and makeup removal

Many different factors can cause skin pigmentation, including things like scars, burns, exposure to sunlight, pregnancy, genetics, and ageing.

Pigmentation, or hyperpigmentation, is another term for ‘colouring’. Common forms of skin pigmentation include freckles, sun/age spots and melasma, also known as facial pigmentation.

At NAAMA, we specialise in the safe removal of many types of skin pigmentation. If you’re curious about your eligibility for skin pigmentation removal, take our online quiz to find out if it’s suitable for your skin.

What is the main reason for pigmentation?

Often also referred to as hyperpigmentation, it can happen for a variety of reasons. The most common causes of skin pigmentation are:

  • Genetics
  • A change in your hormones (particularly during pregnancy or when using hormonal contraception)
  • Over exposure to the sun or UV light
  • Certain medical conditions, like melasama and vitiligo
  • Trauma to the skin, such as burns or other wounds

Thanks to our innovative technology and experienced consultants, you can be confident about removing cosmetic tattoos and microblading – both popular treatments at NAAMA.

How do you get rid of skin pigmentation?

You might be wondering, “does pigmentation go away?” And in some cases, the answer is yes. However, it is dependent on the initial cause of the hyperpigmentation, on your skin tone, and how well you care for your skin.

Some freckles, known as ephelides, appear in the summer and fade during the winter. The other type of freckles, which are called solar lentigines, are known to accumulate with age and don’t tend to fade. The only step you can take to prevent getting more of them is to protect your skin from the sun using SPF lotions, regardless of whether the sun is shining or not.

At NAAMA, we understand that some people see their freckles as an unwanted blemish, while others see them as a thing of beauty. When it comes to skin health and self-esteem, we take great pride in helping clients feel comfortable in their own skin.

That’s why we specialise in safe pigmentation removal, using our very own LightSense laser technology. Backed by years of scientific research undertaken by both physicists and dermatologists, our laser penetrates the pigment in your skin using ultra-fast light beams for a gentle approach.

    Can anyone undergo pigmentation removal?

Yes, but there are caveats. If you have a darker skin tone, the laser technology used could cause damage to the melanin in your skin and leave the area looking lighter than the rest of your body.

This is why you should seek advice from our expert consultants and dermatologists, who will be able to advise you on the best course of action for your skin. We review every client on an individual basis in order to ensure the best protection for your skin.
